Although we aren’t able to travel right now, that doesn’t stop us from thinking about or dreaming about traveling in the future when it’s safe to do so. In honor of World Environment Day , we wanted to offer 5 tips on how to be a sustainable traveler to make sure you not only have the best experience possible, but still help protect the environment the best we can. The world is always changing, and it’s more important than ever to do what we can to help support this beautiful planet we want to explore.
Find Ways to Appreciate Nature
One of the most memorable and environmentally friendly experiences you can have is just exploring the beautiful nature and scenery all around you. We suggest finding some trails to go hiking or biking, as well as taking to the water for some peaceful kayaking or sailing. Not your pace? Have a picnic in a local park, relax outside and soak up some sun!
Utilize Multi-Use Items
Whether it’s using plastic water bottles, straws or plastic bags throughout your trip, these items are often the most littered or thrown out. While the heavy use of plastic is already a bad thing, many items such as these are not biodegradable and don’t break down. Instead, bring or use alternatives such as reusable water bottles or tote bags for when you need to shop for new items. Remember: Reduce, reuse, recycle!
Find the Hidden Gems
There’s no feeling quite like discovering something new and incredible that you weren’t expecting on a trip. One of the best ways to be a sustainable traveler is to eat at local restaurants and food carts, as well as exploring the nooks and crannies of the city you’re visiting and make new discoveries. These are not just eco-friendly options, but also go a long way to helping local workers and smaller businesses.
Be a “Slow Traveler”
Oftentimes, there is so much to see and do on a vacation that it’s hard to do everything on your list. However, the mindset of a “slow traveler” is the exact opposite of this. Instead of bouncing around from city to city trying to see everything in a short amount of time, a slow traveler takes the time the fully soak up everything one particular place or environment has to offer, which often leads to a much richer and more fulfilling experience.
Share Your Stories and Tips
While we’re so happy to help you become a more environmentally friendly traveler, you can help promote sustainable travel yourself by sharing your great travel stories with friends and family! Doing so, you can offer your own sustainable travel tips you’ve learned, as well as give advice to your loved ones for how they can be eco-friendly travelers!
Those were just 5 tips for how to be a sustainable traveler, but of course, there are so many other ways to make your travel experience even more environmentally friendly. After all, travel is all about seeing the world, and if we don’t take care of it, there won’t be anything left to see! Do you have any special tips you want to share with other travelers?
