“Here I go again on my own,
Going down the only road I’ve ever known,
Like a drifter, I was born to walk alone.”
You might be thinking to yourself, “What a great song! I haven’t heard this one in a long time!” Well, while it’s a classic tune that is fun and nostalgic for some, your company’s road warriors have likely heard this song on the radio 20 times — in the past week.
Though the idea of traveling frequently for work might sound glamorous on paper, the life of a road warrior can be difficult in many ways. In fact, five of our own road warrior clients have traveled a combined total of 488,480 miles between 683 trips in 2019 alone! Some have even made more than 150 trips and traveled over 140,000 miles on their own in the past year!
Since these dedicated people are traveling so much to help business grow, they are a vital part of a company’s success. We’re highlighting some of the toughest aspects of life on the road to help you better understand the challenging life of your road warriors.
Burn Out and Lack of Energy
The long hours that go into traveling from place to place can quickly burn people out both mentally and physically. On top of this, people who are constantly moving don’t often have the time or opportunity to enjoy a home-cooked, healthy meal; life on the road can lead to unhealthy meal choices that will further impact someone’s health. Throw on the stress of constantly changing products to sell, technologies to use and pitches to create, the road warrior lifestyle can get difficult.
Hard to Stay Connected with People
One of the biggest difficulties of life on the road that many people overlook is the fact that these people spend a lot of time away from family, friends and even pets. Constant travel is more than enough to make people feel lonely, and convenient social tech such as FaceTime can only do so much to help people connect. Because of frequent travel, special days and events are commonly missed, which can sometimes hurt road warriors’ relationships.
How to Make Life Easier for Road Warriors
There are many ways companies can help make life on the road easier for their road warriors. For example, helping to organize trips by booking hotels in advance is one simple thing to take off a hard worker’s plate. Another way to make life easier for road warriors is to allow for a bit of downtime. Some extra time to enjoy a unique city they might not otherwise visit can go a long way in keeping people fresh and excited to travel for their day job.
While we may not see them all too often in the office, road warriors deserve praise for the commitments they make to help a company succeed.
